After Rachel's death, Darrell, reads from Rachel's diary, pointing out Rachel knew of her demise before incidents began to unfold at Columbine High School. Darrel mentions her friends heard her say, "I will not live long Somehow, Rachel knew she was going to die. She prayed asking God to use her for His kingdom before her time would come to an end. Little did she know her story would touch the lives of millions across the United States. The Christian life would seem strange to those on the outside. We are not driven by the usual passions and motivations. Our actions can easily be misinterpreted. But one mark which should be seen in the Christian life is sacrifice. But this is not a burden in the sense as it would seem to non-Christians. The things of this present world grow strangely dim as the Bible expresses and the man or women who call Christ their Savior experience. Rachel knew this very well and did not fear death but accepted what would be the end of her life with her strong faith. Not a blind faith but one we can read of in Scripture, which has been recorded during the past several thousand years and can be tested true. I mention this because you might be one on the outside looking in and wondering about the validity of the Bible and the Christian faith. It is good to ask these questions. By doing so, one can make an educated decision on the faith. But faith, of course, in and of itself is not dependent on education but on belief. Click on the link above labeled 'validity' and read the pop-up box and see this link as well; Witness. The Bible tells us,"... faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." 1 What an interesting concept to put into practice. Faith is substance. Faith is something tangible and not just an invisible force that eludes our senses. With all the doubt and fear, we can have faith. Rachel had a faith that was immovable. Jesus has told us we must be childlike to enter the Kingdom. He was speaking of the afterlife we all wonder about. We ask if such a place can exist or is this an esoteric concept meant to guide society. Note the difference between fear and faith. I believe we see both of them working here in this story, and it also plays a part in our daily lives. Rachel gives us an example of faith few Christians in the West ever express. Rachel did not flinch at death. She followed Jesus' teaching. She truly loved her neighbor. She was good at that simply because she truly did love God. That is what Christianity is all about: A love relationship that breaks the bonds of this world. When Rachel said yes to the question, "Do you believe in God?", She was not giving a textbook response, but one of passion and love - the love she valued can only be experienced by a believer which comes from knowing God. And perhaps we can find her character in the words of Jesus as we find them in the Gospel of Matthew; "No one takes my life from me. I lay it down freely." 2 Let's read Jesus' words from the Gospel of John chapter 10 verses 14 through 18:
John 10:14-18 Berean Literal Bible How sure was Jesus' statements that He was laying His life down with purpose and intent? How confident was Jesus of Nazareth about His authority which we just read of in the previous Bible verses? Let's read a bit more and look at what Jesus expressed during one of His trials that would lead to His crucifixion. And remember Jesus, is talking to His judge, jury, and executioner during this trial. He had already been scourged by a cat of nine tails which was specially designed to break bones, tear flesh off the human body, and even disemboweled those who received this torture.
The torture was designed to extract a confession of guilt so crimes committed in the area may be resolved. But Jesus had no words to speak. The stripes He took upon His back would land with all the might that they were to be delivered with. He would bear the full brunt of the whip; He would bear the sins of the world. As the prophet Isaiah mentions 750 years before Jesus' birth, "He remained silent before His shearers."3 but He accused no one here nor confessed any guilt. He could have mentioned any one of our sins which He would be guilty of due on our behalf.
After this torture, which left Him so disfigured you could not make Him out to be a man, the Roman guard beat a crown of thorns on His head with sticks and forced the sharply spiked crown into the scalp of Jesus' head, mocking His Kingship while verbally abusing Him as well. Pilate had just heard that Jesus called Himself the Son of God. Starting in the Gospel of John chapter nineteen verse eight:
John 19:8 Let's stop here for a moment and understand what is taking place: Understand the questioning here is designed in the ancient courts of Rome to give the defendant a plea for his case. By not answering Pilate, Jesus was giving no defense for Himself. Pilate was astounded by Jesus' silence. He could not believe after the torture He had gone through that, Jesus remained silent in his presence.
10 Therefore Pilate says to Him, "Do You not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?"
Jesus answered him,
Jesus not only tells Pilate , ruthless Pilate, I might add as he was known historically,
"you have NO AUTHORITY", Though Pilate was the most powerful man in this region, Jesus the Christ was in control and even passed judgment Himself on His accusers right there in court speaking to Pilate during His trial!
Once you receive Jesus as your Savior, you are a son or daughter of God, and nothing on earth can change that! Rachel's Choice was hers and hers alone. She chose eternal life. Although it seemed she had no choice on that day, she had a choice because love offers more than what this world can offer. She made one that focused on eternity and not in this present time we are in. And she was the only one asked - the only one given an option. Why? Note the mark that brought her demise was her answer to the question:
Do you believe in God? "Yes"
Sometime later, Darrell receives Rachel's backpack from the police with her diary in it. Darrel sees the drawing of the rose in the diary which she drew and Rachel's statements about her own death. She knew, somehow, her time was limited. Rachel had written in her diary the following statements
Watch this nine-minute video as
Thirteen people died senselessly that day. The youth were influenced to believe they were to make the world a better place by following in the footsteps of Hitler, of all people. The shooting was planned to be executed on Hitler's birthday. Rachel was a faithful Christian. She lived her beliefs by showing kindness to her classmates. Her life exemplified what a Christian should be. She tried to share her faith in Jesus Christ, which she shared with her would-be assassins a few weeks beforehand.
Rachel was the first person shot. She received a bullet to her back and leg but did not die. Later the boys returned, and while Rachel was lying on the floor bleeding, she was asked if she still believed in God, and with a response of "Yes." she was fatally shot.
One thought that comes to mind is why the young murderers ask a question regarding whether God exists or not of Rachel. While all the other victims were never given a question or a chance to give a response - they were murdered outright - Rachel Scott was given a choice. Why is that the case? Think of the moral implications on both sides. One student went about being kind; the other was about to kill as many students as he could. One died for a God of love; the other student died for hate and evil. Have you ever considered that Christians might be correct in their belief? That there is a God: and that this God is love. God has told us to love one another. Why would children plan to murder their classmates, as we have seen in this tragic incident? Why would they ask one particular question of one individual and no one else? Jesus tells us, I came to give life and life more abundantly. Satan comes to kill, steal, and destroy.
John 10:10 Perhaps the answer Rachel gave was the correct one! Think about this for a minute: Rachel was concerned with her neighbor's welfare. While a black student was harassed by these young assassins before he was shot simply for being black, Rachel had previously befriended the individual to make sure he did not feel excluded. This was part of Rachel's life. Meanwhile, her assassins plotted to follow in Hitler's footsteps by killing innocent individuals based on what they believed caused problems in their world. This was their way of solving social issues. Rachel had another way based on God's words we find in the Holy Bible. Recently as I was updating this web page, a young girl was driven by some philosophical ideology that she could murder innocent children as young as six years of age in a school setting. Her ideological profile was far from Biblical morality. Biblical morality in our day is taught as a hate crime. This is the dark path of destruction our society is heading to. Some went as far as to say it's those Christians and their values that caused the problem.
Mother Teresa once said, If we can murder innocent children, there will be nothing left between you and me, The Bible tells us sin has brought death to this world. And we see this more and more in our culture. A culture that kills babies in the mother's womb has no place for ideas that oppose this way of thinking. This is what is happening in our schools as we see children murdering children. I personally believe this violence due to the murder of innocence will spill over onto onto our streets. I believe we have already experienced a foretaste of this. Think for a moment: Christian values are deemed hateful. There can be no God, not alone, a God Whose key definition is love. People march in the street, yelling for their right to murder innocent children in the womb for the sake of what the Bible calls sinful living.
The wages of sin are truly death! And it is upon us by our own hands. I believe if these young murderers found love and faith, which comes through knowing the God of the Bible, this tragedy would have never happened. They would be on the other side of the gun responding with love which Rachel knew and lived by even at the point of death. I would suggest you give this some thought. If we can see that there is evil and good in the world, we can determine there is a God of love and a devil who does evil. I believe this is the question you are asking.
If you happen to be wondering about that right now, you are in the right place. Perhaps if the right answer was given to these children, who were about to murder their classmates, at an earlier time in their young life might have placed them on a different path that might have led to another destination than the one they were on. For them, it was too late. They had made a choice, and they took their own path. But for Rachel Scott, it was just the beginning of Eternal Life with the God she loved so much. There was nothing that was going to change that. The Famed Ten Commandments in the Bible, which are not displayed in the public school system and are frowned upon, have as one of the commandments, "Do not murder." This command is coming from God directly. It is giving society a rule book to live by. But we have the concept of the Separation of Church and State, which is not used in its original intent. Today, we have an abusive form of what our founding fathers here in the United States meant by these terms. The original meaning of these words was to keep a state religion from imposing its ideas by force upon other religious ideas. By keeping Bibles out of school, we have the very concept of Separation of Church and State being violated. We have a philosophical concept of separation of ideas imposing itself upon another philosophical concept. So we have, by force, a conceptual ideology imposing itself upon another. I have seen a video of a teacher holding a toy gun in front of young children in a elementary school. She was shooting at the most important man in America, the president of the United States. Guns in and of themselves are not evil. Ideas can bring life or death. Without guns, we could not defend ourselves from those who decide they will kill innocent people based on their philosophical concepts. The Bible was used to teach children in our public school system how to read at one time in America. Today, they say you cannot have Bibles or verses from the Bible within a public school. One lawyer went as far as to defend a child who wore a shirt that said "Kill your Teacher." due to freedom of speech. There is a day coming when we will be asked a question. It is said when we stand before God, there is one question God will ask of us. It will not be on how good or bad you might have been. You will not be graded on a curve. The question God will ask of each and everyone will be, "What have you done with my Son Jesus?" The question will be whether we believed Him and believed in Him. That is, whether or not we have accepted the free gift of Salvation Jesus offered through His life, suffering, death, and resurrection.
Salvation and eternal Life are free gifts. They cannot be earned, as many believe they are. Just as Jesus gave up His life of His own free will, you must choose by your own free will whether you believe in Christ or not.
You may not be anything like these children who had gone so far astray as to commit murder. Your good deeds cannot earn you Heaven. My friend, only through the regeneration that takes place when one receives the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit is one counted worthy of Heaven, at which time you literally become a "New Creation," as we are told in Scripture. That new creation is what allows humanity entrance to Heaven. Without that, no one can be in God's presence due to the purity of God. If I can say it like this - giving an analogy: A penguin lives in Antarctica on the ice and in the icy water. It cannot live in the arid plains of Africa. In the same way, someone who is not Born Again is not able to enter God's Kingdom, which will come to the earth after the Tribulation period. Once "Born Again," you become a New Creation, which is the transformation one needs to enter Heaven. You will find the Love of God is far beyond anything this temporal life has to offer. Rachel Scott knew this first hand. She expressed it in how she lived and what she stood for. The choice is yours. Will you make the right one? What is the "evidence" that Rachel Scott produced when she was asked whether she believes in God or not? Her evidence was her life - the way she lived her life - all the good things she had done, as her father explains in his statements concerning his daughter heard in the audio message above. Ultimately we see she would not deny her belief in God, her faith, even at the point of death. She gave her life for her belief. Our faith in God has to be evidenced by the way we live our lives. Rachel, at her young age, did just that right up to the point of martyrdom. Perhaps you are ready and would like to say a Prayer of Salvation. Let's recite a prayer right now. Dear Lord Jesus, please forgive me. Please take a moment and learn more about the Christian faith. See this link, "thoughts," and please give some regard to what you are reading. Venture through this website. Today you are given a choice. Will you choose eternal life?
You can If this is the first time you are being exposed the the scriptures here and wonder about Jesus' mission. I want to reveal some more of Who Jesus is. I mentioned that Jesus was the Suffering Servant Messiah as we saw Him during His time on earth some 2,000 years ago. The Rabbis came up with the terms Moshiach Ben-Yosef as they say a suffering Messiah in the life of Joseph who saved his people. The Story of Joseph shows us Christ - Messiah at His first appearance upon the earth. The parallels is outstanding!. The Rabbis saw this Messiah. It was bewildering to them but we read in the Book of Daniel, "The Messiah (Anointed One) will be cut off but not for Himself". The Messiah will die! Then we have the picture in the Torah, of the Conquering King Messiah, Messiah Ben David. King David shows us the role of the second coming of the Christ (Messiah). The outright prophecies in the Torah, "They shall look upon Me, the One they have pierced" and the lives lived out portraying the first and second coming of the Moshiach are they so humanity can see and be transformed by being born again after the pattern of the Second Adam Who is Jesus the Moshiach. Their can be no doubt. You must believe to escape what Messiah came to save us from! Below we will read a bit more of what Jesus had to say to us:
