Colossians 1:9-10

9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
NASU
First my dear brothers and sisters, we need to make sure that fasting does not affect our health in adverse ways. This is a fast from solid foods. You should drink liquids during this fast. Some of us are only capable of partial fast. That is to say eating lightly as opposed to a complete abstinence from solid food. Perhaps you can commit to eating a light breakfast as opposed to three meals a day. You should consult your doctor first. This is why you may have an over zealous craving for food. It could be for physical reasons outside the natural desire to want to eat.

Fasting will draw you closer to the Lord. basically you are telling God you want to abstain from the desires of your body for Him, His word and His presence. God will definitely meet you if your motives are right. The enemy will attack you of course and you will see how the verse being studied can apply to your life during the fast. Doing a partial fast is alright. A twenty four hour fast is not really that long a time.

When we fast, we should not do it ritualistically but with a true intention of honoring the Lord. We want to examine our hearts and be prepared for what the Lord will show us. Meditation on scripture and prayer should be the course of the day before and during the fast.

With faith you can do all things and this includes abstaining from food.

2 Corinthians 5:7

7 We live by faith, not by sight.
NIV

Galatians 2:19-20

19 For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
NIV
Don't make fasting a 'law.' No one is the boss of the fast. It is between you and God. Please take what I say as suggestions and not personally. We want to tell God that this flesh and its worldly desires are something we want to abstain from. We live by faith in that Jesus died for our sins and rose again.

This flesh will once and for all be done away with in the resurrection, but for now we walk by faith and are sojourners here till the appointed time. Let us look to the better things - God's word - and leave all hindrances behind so that we like Paul may run the good race and finish well.

Zechariah 7:8-10

8 And the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah, saying,

9 Thus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother;

10 and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.
ASV

Zechariah 7:6

6 And when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?
ASV

The Lord always wanted His people to use good judgment while showing compassion without discrimination and false evaluations. He wants us to have compassion on the less fortunate and the foreigner.

One thing we can be sure of, when we hunger, we tend to search for food. This is natural as all creatures need nourishment. Zachariah brings out this fact as we know how to treat ourselves, but how due we treat others? Is the fruit of the Spirit in our lives and is it easily seen?

When we contemplate going without food for a time, we have a tendency to worry a bit and overeat just before. This should not be the goal after or before a fast. The purpose is to deny oneself in order to gain knowledge of what the Holy Spirit wants to show us. You will find it a natural tendency to want to overeat before and after a fast. One must learn it is in the denying of one's self.

Matthew 6:16-18

16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

18 so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Jesus of Nazareth
NIV
Unfortunately, pride has its own appetite and wants to be filled as well. Murmuring, boasting, even in an inward fashion is not desirable. Do we raise our hands to honor God and undermine a brother or sister? Should we not speak to one another and resolve issues before we bring our sacrifice of self denial and praise to our Lord?

1Samuel 15:22

22 But Samuel replied, "What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Obedience is far better than sacrifice. Listening to him is much better than offering the fat of rams.
NIV
Should we not live by the word of the Lord if we abstain from food? We will fail while in our mortal bodies but do we do so without care for "leaving all hindrances aside?" We seek our salvation with great care - though it is a free gift, we are called to repentance if we are Christian.

Isa 58:3-11

3 'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?' "In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers.

4 Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, To make your voice heard on high.

5 Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the Lord?

6 "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' "If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

10 If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.

11 The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
NKJV

General Guide Lines for Home Meetings:

These are general guide lines as to keep our meetings in order.

Our meetings are meant to feed the inner person and we need to focus on the other person at the meeting. I'm still learning this myself so I'm no expert.

First it is best to pick topics and verses not too in depth for our meetings. It is better to feed the spirit than the mind for our meetings and with a limiting time factor, the feeding of the spirit is best.

Also topics like eschatology, the study of the end times, can be in depth and there are several views people may have. For this reason it is better just to stay simple at these meetings. This is not a Bible study but a fasting for spiritual growth.

Another important aspect is to pick a verse the group can focus on. The verse/topic has to be somewhat concise and not vague or we will not be able to meditate on the word and have the Lord prepare our hearts for what He wants to do in us.

There are many people attending our meetings praise God, so there must be a time limit imposed on the main speaker of the month and the participating individuals.

This includes:

The Main Speaker;

The Group; Prayer; Diner; God Bless
