Malachi 4:4-6

4 "Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.

5 "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.

6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers;

NIV
Modern man has pondered when men began to devise laws to govern himself. We see ancient Rome to have a system of laws that we copy to some extent here in America.

But why does man need laws to govern Himself? Can not we just do as we please? Ever hear the expression, "if it feels good, do it?"

If we were to live by that expression, we do lose what is needed most, a governmental structure to ensure societies flourish. Some argue that laws are circumstantial and not universal - relative to circumstance and not to cover all mankind globally.

Though we know laws are different because cultures and geographical designations of different people create different requirements, there are global laws, such as the ones we find in the Ten Commandments within the Bible that state, "do not commit murder," to be a universally accepted rule, although it is broken continually all over the world.

Laws are needed to protect people from injustices. Whether the injustice is from the governmental organization, church, society, or individuals, people speak out and need to be heard as to create a bases of resolving differences and conflicts.

Obviously we need protection from criminal activity, from violence, and unfair practices of those who can wield power due to influences and finances or just brute force.

But how do we interpret law. The American Constitution is looked at through the looking glass of our age but it was written by highly educated men who sought to empower the people and not to allow government to become too all powerful. Are we situated in a position where that still holds true today? Are the public educated enough to understand what their rights are and when laws and views change? If not, then the people are weaker by default regardless.

Looking at the Bible, we have the first five Books of Moses - the Pentateuch. Within this scope of writing there is the book of Deuteronomy, which is the governing rule for the nation to be known as Israel today. Israel was under a theocracy - Governed by God. Jacob, the father of the nation Israel, had his name changed by God to Israel. The name Jacob actually means, "heal catcher." It is a picture of some one who takes from you by a covetous behavior.

Israel means, "Governed by God."

Israel's twelve children, the twelve tribes of Israel the nation, were to be under God's law and provision. They were to be a light pointing to the God of Abraham the patriarch.

Looking at the Bible, we find God giving Adam and Eve the first rule - not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This rule was broken, hence we have the fall and the resulting lawlessness, pain and suffering, hard labor, unjustice, death, a Garden of Eden which turned into the harsh ground for man to till his crops in, and eternal separation from God.

God promises to make restitution to mankind and the earth by a promised child - a Messiah in a statement known as the protoevangelion - the first offer of the Good News - the Gospel. First and foremost, man became separated from God which meant man would die and be an outcast for his eternal existence of his soul.
Genesis 3:15

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

NIV
God tells satan that his head would be crushed by an individual. Scholars see the heel as the death of Jesus of Nazareth on the Cross at Calvary. satan's power would be diminished and a set time and point is now in place for his ultimate demise. We read in the book of Luke, a physician, of the promised child's birth being foretold to a women named Mary.
We read...

Luke 1:26-35

26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,

27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

28 The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.

31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.

32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

34 "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. NIV
Again we read in Matthew's eye witness account...
Matthew 2:1-6

1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magia from the east came to Jerusalem

2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.

5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:

6 "'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'

NIV
The teachers of the law and the chief priest quote the book of Micah - an Old Testament Book. The Bible is divided into two main divisions. The Old and the New Testaments. Micah prophesies the exact birth place of Jesus Christ approximately 720 years before Jesus' birth as well as stating He is from eternity past - The Everlasting Father.
Micah 5: 2, 4

2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD , in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. NIV
Let us read doctor Luke's meticulous account of the facts.
Luke 1:1-5

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. NIV
Thus, we see the Bible records the start of all creation going back to the first book within the Bible, Geneses, the fall of creation, and the promised restitution. The Law was given to protect the human race in order for the eventual birth of the promised Messiah and of a future nation - Israel.

There can be no greater need for law and order. That mankind would enter Heaven based on the work of one individual. That individual being Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Through one man Adam, all fall short of the glory of God - entering Heaven, and by one man Jesus Christ the second Adam, anyone who accepts the finished work of the Cross has entrance into Heaven.

In light of the outstanding prophetic nature of the Bible, I cannot see why anyone would not come to know Christ personally and turn from the ways of this world. For the pleasures of this temporal state, men condemn themselves for all eternity. I rather pick up my cross and follow Jesus. A better hope.

The Bible's accuracy is outstanding. There is no other work of antiquity that can approach what the Bible has in its support for its accounts. No other person in History has the autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth in authentication from tens to thousands of manuscripts and thousands of witnesses.

Below, the Apostle Paul gives us reason for the Law.

Gal 3:19 - 29

19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.
Down to comment

20 Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one.

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.

22 But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.

24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. (The Law.)

26 Sons and Heirs. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Luke 16:10-17

The words of Jesus

10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.

11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man's, who will give you what is your own?

13 "No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."
Mammon is referencing money... the love of money as if it were a god as opposed to loving God and His truths.
14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him.
Speaking to the Pharisees Jesus states...
15 And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

16 "The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it.
John the Baptist was preaching before Christ in order to prepare His way. Many repented at the preaching of John, but the Pharisees were too corrupted to truly have a heart of repentance. There righteousness was an outward apparel while inwardly they were filled with "dead men's bones"... condemned with no hope because of their hardened hearts.
Comment
17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail.
Christ was the fulfillment of the Law's requirements of perfection. He had filled the requirements of the Law while alive as a man. He was the only man that ever lived who could. In addition; an unblemished lamb (of the Old Testament) had to be sacrificed by the Mosaic Law, Christ being born of a virgin through the ministry of angels was the God man. He was perfect in that He is God and lived the only sinless life. He also fulfilled the necessity of the lamb not having any broken bones for the Passover requirement (Mosaic Law) and of the Levitical Law as well. This was discovered as soldiers were ordered to break the legs of the crucified men as to hasten their deaths before the start of the Passover evening. They found Jesus had died already.

Just as the angel of death had "passed over" the homes which were marked by the lamb's blood on their door post, those who accept Christ will pass over from death to life in a new birth. This was the symbolic meaning of the blood covenant of the Old Testament and Jesus confirming the New Covenant with His own blood. While Jesus was celebrating the Passover with His disciples before His crucifixion, He spoke of a New Covenant in His blood and broken body.

Moses had the Hebrews brake bread. drink wine, and eat a Passover lamb in a covenant being made by God and newly freed people. They were ordered by God not to forget this covenant and to practice it every year as a reminder of their former bondage and freedom given to them by God.

Christ, the God man, makes the New Covenant in which whomever trust Him and His work on the Cross will enter into Eternal Life

The Sermon on the Mount
Matt 5:1 - Matt 7:20

1 One day as the crowds were gathering, Jesus went up the mountainside with his disciples and sat down to teach them.

The Beatitudes
2 This is what he taught them:

3 "God blesses those who realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them.

4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5 God blesses those who are gentle and lowly, for the whole earth will belong to them.

6 God blesses those who are hungry and thirsty for justice, for they will receive it in full.

7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.

10 God blesses those who are persecuted because they live for God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

11 "God blesses you when you are mocked and persecuted and lied about because you are my followers.

12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted, too.

Teaching about Salt and Light
13 "You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

14 You are the light of the world - like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see.

15 Don't hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all.

16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
17 "Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them.

18 I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God's law will remain until its purpose is achieved.

19 So if you break the smallest commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God's laws and teaches them will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

20 "But I warn you - unless you obey God better than the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees do, you can't enter the Kingdom of Heaven at all!

Teaching about Anger
21 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Do not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.'

22 But I say, if you are angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the high council. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

23 "So if you are standing before the altar in the Temple, offering a sacrifice to God, and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you,

24 leave your sacrifice there beside the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.

25 Come to terms quickly with your enemy before it is too late and you are dragged into court, handed over to an officer, and thrown in jail.

26 I assure you that you won't be free again until you have paid the last penny.

Teaching about Adultery
27 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Do not commit adultery.'

28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 So if your eye - even if it is your good eye - causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

30 And if your hand - even if it is your stronger hand - causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Teaching about Divorce
31 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a letter of divorce.'

32 But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Jesus was not saying you should not marry a women simply because she had gone through a divorce. Men would divorce their wives for burning the pancakes simply because they wanted another women or just to get rid of the one they had.

Please understand here that at this time, Jesus was speaking to men who would divorce their wives for little or no reason at all. Women had no rights in this society and at this time in history in general.

Jesus was attempting to show the men the folly of their ways. It could be said He was standing up for women's rights. Women basically took care of the household and the men provided for them. The law given in the Old Testament to Moses by God entailed the needs of orphans, widows, parents, children, those in financial despair, and women.

The law in a very real sense is God's Grace to the human race as to govern themselves and not to resort to the never ending downward spiral of men's desperate and wicked heart. It made sure a women would not be left to fend for herself in a society where women had no rights outside of the law.

Let us take a brief look at the Ten Commandments that our society here in the United States of America have decided is not worthy to have displayed in our nation's capital.

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1-17

1 And God spoke all these words:

2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  1. (1) 3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. (2) 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

  3. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

6 but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  4. (3) 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  5. (4) 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

  6. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.

11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

  7. (5) 12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
  8. (6) 13 "You shall not murder.
  9. (7) 14 "You shall not commit adultery.
  10. (8) 15 "You shall not steal.
  11. (9) 16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  12. (10) 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
NIV
Our society is not above murder, adultery, stealing, giving a false testimony of a neighbor, and our society certainly does not honor God's name but profanes it profusely in our common language of the day.

Is there a correlation between not honoring God and the way people treat each other? Well, if you do not honor God - the God of the Holy Bible, you will certainly honor some other ideas other than the law He puts forth.

Our society is its own victim. We are victims of following false gods - our own ways. Do you believe that we are a cosmic accident created by random chances known as Darwinian Evolution? For a good discussion on this false creation (god) of mankind, see the creation link. Man creates a god and blinds himself and his science with false conclusion to evade the God who made him.

Are there dangers in believing that you are a cosmic accident and you are more evolved than other races? You bet there are and unfortunately countless millions have been murdered while ruthless dictators claim evolution as their guide and premiss for their behavior. Escaping a Loving God means man must create another and fall under concepts such as Darwinian thought.

Teaching about Vows
33 "Again, you have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Do not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.'

34 But I say, don't make any vows! If you say, 'By heaven!' it is a sacred vow because heaven is God's throne.

35 And if you say, 'By the earth!' it is a sacred vow because the earth is his footstool. And don't swear, 'By Jerusalem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the great King.

36 Don't even swear, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or black.

37 Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.
The folks at this time would swear and basically everyone new that the person was not telling the truth. It is similar to children crossing their fingers while they make a promise. Vows in themselves are actually biblical (Deuteronomy 10:20, Jeremiah 12:16, Leviticus 19:19, and in Matthew 26:63 Jesus answers Caiaphas the high priest before the Sanhedrin only after Caiaphas' question is presented in an oath), but once again, men create their own rules and the system becomes corrupted. Men would make vows and their words would just fall to the ground.

Teaching about Revenge
38 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'If an eye is injured, injure the eye of the person who did it. If a tooth gets knocked out, knock out the tooth of the person who did it.'

39 But I say, don't resist an evil person! If you are slapped on the right cheek, turn the other, too.

40 If you are ordered to court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too.

41 If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.

42 Give to those who ask, and don't turn away from those who want to borrow.

Teaching about Love for Enemies
43 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Love your neighbor' and hate your enemy.

44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too.

46 If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.

47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that.

48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Jesus - the God man teaches us to love our enemies. Darwin taught us that the strongest survives and the weak must die. Among the the "weak" are the Negro, Asian, Jew, and other societies who may be disliked or impoverished at times. Are you from any of these backgrounds and believe in Darwinian thought?

The only way to be perfect is to accept Christ and become born again ... receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior. This guarantees Heaven regardless of you past history.

Matthew 6
Teaching about Giving to the Needy
1 "Take care! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired, because then you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.

2 When you give a gift to someone in need, don't shout about it as the hypocrites do - blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I assure you, they have received all the reward they will ever get.

3 But when you give to someone, don't tell your left hand what your right hand is doing.

4 Give your gifts in secret, and your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.

Teaching about Prayer and Fasting
5 "And now about prayer. When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get.

6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.

7 "When you pray, don't babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again.

8 Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

9 Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored.

10 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven.

11 Give us our food for today,

12 and forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us.

13 And don't let us yield to temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

14 "If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.

15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

16 "And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, who try to look pale and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I assure you, that is the only reward they will ever get.

17 But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face.

18 Then no one will suspect you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in secret. And your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.

Teaching about Money and Possessions
19 "Don't store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal.

20 Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves.

21 Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be.

22 "Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul.

23 But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be!

24 "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

25 "So I tell you, don't worry about everyday life - whether you have enough food, drink, and clothes. Doesn't life consist of more than food and clothing?

26 Look at the birds. They don't need to plant or harvest or put food in barns because your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are.

27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not.

28 "And why worry about your clothes? Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing,

29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.

30 And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won't he more surely care for you? You have so little faith!

31 "So don't worry about having enough food or drink or clothing.

32 Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs,

33 and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.

34 "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.

Matthew 7
Don't Condemn Others
1 "Stop judging others, and you will not be judged.

2 For others will treat you as you treat them. Whatever measure you use in judging others, it will be used to measure how you are judged.

3 And why worry about a speck in your friend's eye when you have a log in your own?

4 How can you think of saying, 'Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,' when you can't see past the log in your own eye?

5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend's eye.

6 "Don't give what is holy to unholy people. Don't give pearls to swine! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

Effective Prayer
7 "Keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened.

8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks.

9 You parents - if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?

10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not!

11 If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

The Golden Rule
12 "Do for others what you would like them to do for you. This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

The Narrow Gate
13 "You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way.

14 But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it.

The Tree and Its Fruit
15 "Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep, but are really wolves that will tear you apart.

16 You can detect them by the way they act, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit. You don't pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles.

17 A healthy tree produces good fruit, and an unhealthy tree produces bad fruit.

18 A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.

19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.

20 Yes, the way to identify a tree or a person is by the kind of fruit that is produced.
